Well I’ll be the first. Yeh!!! I’ve had the Edge for a week now and I am a new fish owner, first time aquarium owner. A month ago I bought my Betta (Beau), who moved from his plastic container, to a small round bowl, to a larger sized vase-bowl, to a flemsy plastic 1gallon corner filtered tank, into the Edge. Before I express our joy, I have to explain by overall Betta owning experience so you can further understand my Betta/Edge experience.

When I first got Beau he looked like a peacock feather (he’s a turquois crowntail, or was), and he’s got great energy and a personality that makes me think if I kissed him he’d turn into a prince. I swear he begged me to take him home (Wal*@rt at 3am buying dogfood), he was calling me (save me from this tupperware hell). Anyway, the bowl thing got old quickly cause his water stayed fowl, even with water changes, so I opted up to a filtered tank. Before doing so I noticed what looked like an odd grayish white fade thing. Day by day it continued to spread as he faded from blue to white. I put him on some recommended treatment (everyone has a recommendation) and drugged him for a week. Thank God he didn’t get ill, but the color thing never changed. Finally I took him to the petstore to get a fish person’s opinion and they told he was fine. As I continued to do my own research I learned that some Bettas can completely change color, fungus is ok on new driftwood, Melafix could potentially be bad for Bettas and other labyrinth organed fish, and the Edge could be bad for Bettas. Mind you, I had just purchased it, set it up, fish is in it.

I recently read an article about the Edge written before it was for sell and I was sorely disappointed in the reviews. People (so-called “fish experts”) who mostly had negative things to say. Most were pissed about goldfish and aesthetics (haters). How new aquarists who purchased such a tank couldn’t possibly care about the fish, but only the looks (so not true). This is not your everyday tank. I personally see it as piece of art, and the fish is my muse. As I read every comment, all I could think was “Oh no, my fish is gonna die from dropsy” or something else dramatic. Now I dont know if my Betta is just really brilliant and/or really hardy, but honestly I think he acted no different than any other time we changed living spaces. I have learned that stress can spark all these different diseases, and almost anything can trigger it. But in nature there is stress; there are fish and other Bettas in their natural habitat (community tanks), there are streams (filter water), there is fungus and bacterias (medication and water changes). There is not glass, tanks, fake heat, filters, nets and peoples dirty hands. One person called it a glass coffin, as if a glass box is fish’s normal living situation. We keep these animals for our own pleasure, be it for an emotional attachment or just because we think they’re pretty, maybe both, or just for a human’s veiwing pleasure. Sometimes we purposely feed fish them to other fish and pets.You can have the perfect, most functionable tank, feed it the best, most expensive or live food, you can be the expert who taught the experts, and your fish could die too. It’s called nature. Sometimes things aren’t always compatible, be it the fish and you, the tank, the food, the meds, the ph., etc… Especially when its been manipulated by Man.

Now maybe I have a magic fish or maybe I’m the fish whisperer (I am a Pisces), only time will tell. But so far we have only had good experiences. Beau appears to love it and loves me for it. He moved from the hood to the Penthouse. It is perfect for he and I’s “lifestyle”. I must admit though that when I first put him in the tank he kind of freaked out looking for the surface, but then he found it and he was cool. This happened a few times as he got acclimated, then it was time to explore the entire tank, nook and cranny, tunnels in and under the wood, plants and all. And in no time at all, actually a matter of minutes. He has learned to come to the open space for not only air but also his food. My floor and/or desk isn’t 100% level so I have some large air bubbles at the surface, but they are not too bothersome as I cannot fix the floor. I bought the Edge thermometer and the water appears to stay between 72 and 79 (mostly 75-79) without the heater, and it is cold, right now, here in Chicago. I’ll get the gravel vacuum thingy when the time comes, but I have done a water change already, with ease. Tannins from my driftwood turned the water’s color, now it has a white fungus on the wood. Experts said boil it, some said let it be, some said bleach it. What! Bleach and fish? Cmon.

My beef with the experts is the eagerness to deem something right or wrong or quick-fixed, when nature will take it’s course. I gave my fish an all-in-one treatment for a week, and was about to follow it up with Melafix based on experts’ orders (online and instore), only to realize the fish is healthy and happy, when I could have potentially killed him with all these chemical preventative measures. After misdiagnosing the poor thing with everything from fin rot to ulcers to an extended abdomin (non of which he had), tanks and tank maintenance is the least of my worries. My point is you will probably kill your fish before the tank does.

My tank is beautiful and functions just as well as it looks. My fish, Beau the Betta, is the happiest I have seen, and the size is perfect for him and possibly some small friends. He has a whole little world with a large Mopani driftwood that has become his crib within a crib. And as large as this wood is, with an abundance of pretty tank accessories, there is still ample, free space. For a nano tank, I think it is just the right size. Exactly what I was looking for. I first looked on line for a larger but not too large, modern tank, and all I found was the overpriced Bi*%bs which didn’t impress me at all. Determined to get me and my fish a real aquarium, I went to the Pet@^ and there it was. My swank tank. And at the right price. Have you seen this tank? $99 is a steal for all that you get. A filtered tank with all the important components, and the architectural ambience of a Frank Lloyd Wright home with an infinity pool. The best part is that my fish is filled with glee, gayer than Xmas, happier than a lark. As am I. He also enjoys the view from the top, its kind of fun and panoramic for him, I believe. This tank has not only fulfilled my desire to have my fish housed in a better, healthier living environment, it also filled my interior design needs. If this tank is for the “LifeStyle” market, I agree. People don’t buy stainless steel appliances because it makes the food taste better.

The Edge has made my aquarium experience all the more enchanted for Beau and I. I didn’t think he could be prettier, but in this tank he glows, and it’s not just the lighting. We love it. I will take pictures, and will keep you posted on Beau’s overall existance. I hope my input is helpful to any other Betta or fish owner who has an interest in the Edge. Best advice would be to do your research, don’t be so quick to medicate, and if you must medicate, consider alternative, more natural remedies that may be available and just as effective. The phamaceuticals game is the same in the fish world. I’d also recommend getting the Edge now before they realize they underpriced it. Some it will work great for, some it wont. Once again, a common law of nature. Good luck and enjoy!

This is a great little fish tank. I got my Edge as a birthday present about 2 months ago and have not had a single problem. I have 4 Tiger Bards, one Pleco, and one Leaf fish living in my tank. They all seam happy in there little home. This is the first tank I have ever used live plants in, they look great and are doing just fine . The guy at the pet store was telling me the lights in the tank would not be strong enough to keep live plants , it was great to be able to tell him he was wrong. I could not be happier with this aquarium and i strongly suggest anyone wanting a small fish tank to take a close look at the Fluval Edge.

just noticed the water temp in my tank has reached 30c but the fluval heater i bought with tank is meant to maintain 26c does any 1 had same prob…… had a powercut 2 hrs before it happened wonder if that has anything to do with it?

just got the tank and the filter was working fine, and them Ive put more water in the tank as instructed and the filter just suddenly stopped for no reason and now is not working at all!! Im so disappointed.

Had the edge for a couple of months and very happy.

Noticed that the filter basket has started floating up. How often do i need to change the filter?

I’ve had a Fluval Edge for a few months and I find cleaning it a real pain. I have purchased a magnetic cleaner (not your one) and that helped a bit but t still takes me 2 hours a week to clean everything out and ensure the fish are happy and healthy.

Any advice? I’m grown tired on it already

Keeping any small tank in balance requires adjusting the number and size of fish. Too much need of cleaning points to too much excess food and too many fish or fishcentimeter (think large, few fish or many, short fish).

I change water twice a week and a weekly rinse of the filter as I have the maximum no of fish. Were they not so hard to catch I would have removed one of the species already.

Too many algae to clean is also a question of proper light and period and of adding nutrients and CO2 or Carbo products and proper algae eaters for the leftovers. I had to add light to have all the plants grow.

I suggest working with altering these elements to balance the aquarium.

The built in light fixture does not include a timer but will work with an outlet based timer just like any other aquarium light fixture. In fact we always prefer and recommend using a light timer. Its good for your fish

Cleaner shrimp and small clown fish are popular nano-reef friendly creatures.

In fact, I have a small Ocellaris clown fish in my marine EDGE in the home office and I’m planning to add a cleaner shrimp shortly. Good choice and good luck!

OK: bought the tank (xmas sale, couldn’t help myself).
My only beef is the noisy filter. The tank looks just lovely, but sounds just awful. What a noisy filter! (my other tank has an in-tank Whisper, which is completely, completely silent; i was shocked to hear this power filter: sounds like a diesel engine).
Some on other blogs have said it gets more quiet with a few days of “settling in”. I hope this is true, but am skeptical.
Has anyone here swapped out the Aqua Clear filter for something more quiet?

Hi, Have my Fluval Edge setup and love it, as do my red eye tetras. Am curious to the Fluval Edge heater as to weather it should be fully submerged or should the top of it still be visible out of the water? Have not put fully under (Water level sits at the red light indicator) yet as I remember my old tank (years ago) the heater top and cable had to be just above water. I am assuming it can go under but want to make sure before I destroy it and the fish. Your help appreciated.

The Fluval EDGE filter should run virtually silent. It is possible that you have a defective or malfunctioning unit. You should contact the retailer where you purchased the tank or Hagen directly to resolve the problem and get a replacement filter if this is indeed a bad filter.

I have had my Fluval edge for 3 weeks now and every other day the water level is dropping. I have checked everything and cant find any leaks. Has any else had this problem?

Your water level is likely dropping due to evaporation. Especially in the dry winter months (depending on your climate), it is normal to see greater evaporation. This can occur since the top of the aquarium is exposed (even when covered with the perforated hood).

Hi –

I’ve e-mailed the customer service team several times, but so far, haven’t been able to get any help. I cracked the intake “u” tube on my Fluval Edge, and I need a new one so that the tank functions properly. As it stands now, the tank doesn’t work. Is there any way you can please get me a new intake “u” tube? It would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone else have a problem with the water evaporating quickly? I find I’m topping the water up every three or four days which is becoming a bit of a pain. When the water gets below the glass top of the tank, the noise of the waterfall from the filter gets really loud and annoying. I’ve had to reduce the amount of time the lights are on during the day which is sad as the tank looks beautiful when lit. Other than that, I’m really pleased with it.

I have my Edge set up, and everything is going well, but I have two sets of animals that I don’t know if they’ve been eating or not. My african dwarf frog, I have seen him jump up to the surface to get some air, but whenever I tried putting blood worms in they stayed floating at the top and he never did anything with them. And then the others are the cardinal tetras I have, when I tried putting their food in, if the filter was off my betta swam up and ate the food, and if the filter is on the food would fall to the bottom and they’d be off doing something and miss it.

I’ve only had them a day, though, so I’m sure they’re still adjusting. I’m just overly anxious!

How long should I expect cardinal tetras and an african dwarf frog to get used to the Edge, and eating in it? I got them last night and I tried feeding them then, and then this morning, and both of them just completely ignored the food. It just fell to the gravel to be hosed up by my cory.

I can’t really recommend Angelfish in the EDGE as they will rather quickly outgrow the tank and need something larger.

@Charlotte

It will likely take a couple days for your new tankmates to settle down, especially considering that cardinals can be little picky eaters. If you just set up the tank, make sure you used the included Cycle and Aqua Plus to prepare the water for them and reduce stress. Also, as you’re waiting for them to start eating, be very careful with not dumping a bunch of food in the tank if it’s not immediately consumed. We don’t want to hurt water conditions with excess waste while waiting for them to settle in…

I set u my aquarium on Sunday – followed the directions for water treatment – now (no fish yet) the water is slightly cloudy and there are ‘millions’ of bubbles at the top of the tank. What do I need to do before I take the water to Aquarium Land to get the water tested and get some fish?

The water may be slightly cloudy for a number of reasons. Here are some possibilities:

1. The sand/gravel was dusty and clouded the water, this is very typical when using “live” sand for instance

2. Sometimes adding a bacterial supplement such as Cycle which is included with the EDGE will create a temporary bacterial bloom in the water. This is not dangerous and should clear naturally within a few days

Generally, it is a good idea to have your aquarium water tested before adding fish to insure that it is safe for livestock.

I have purchased a fluval edge heater for my tank and it is fully submerged. I have 2 questions.

1) when i first brought it the red led light bearly lit and now it isnt even on and the heater doesnt feel warm.

should the led light be bright and should the heater be constently warm.

2) when the led heater reaches tempreture does it turn its self off to help maitain the tempreture if the room tempreture is already at 26 degres.

any help would be very usefull because i am thinking of returning the heater.

The heater will not always be turned on as it will only turn on when it needs to heat the water to the preset temp (approx. 78 degrees). You will not see the light on unless it is actually heating. The light is not exceptionally bright but you should be able to tell when it is on. If you’re concerned that it is not functioning properly, I would recommend using an accurate thermometer (glass tube preferably) to verify that your aquarium is at the correct temperature.

My pump has also gone off. I went to see if I could get a replacement pump or motor, and have been told by Pets at home the tank is discontinued. A trip back home has found my fish dead! The pump went off obviously in the middle of the night, I have no idea why….any thoughts?

It’s hard to say exactly what happened without seeing the pump myself but perhaps sand was sucked into the pump? If you troubleshoot everything and still can figure anything out, it’s possible that it’s a manufacturers defect… You can contact Hagen customer support directly to inquire.

Try removing the top cover. I’ve found with some people it is just this piece rattling which causes the noise. It doesn’t really serve any significant function anyways.

Could you give me information on how to contact Fluval Edge Customer Service? One of the light bulbs was not working when I received it, and now (a few weeks later) the other one has gone out too. My local pet store could not help me since they did not have any more kits in stock.

Hi!

I just set up my fluval edge — on sale at my LFS, and I couldn’t resist! But now I have three questions.

1. I thought I had the tank perfectly level when I set it up, but when I filled it with water, a big air bubble formed in the back left corner. It must be a bit off kilter after all — is this dangerous, and what can I do about it?
2. Also, the filter does seem a bit noisy. We did fill it with water before starting it. The model in my LFS was absolutely quiet — no noise at all, that I could hear. What can I do for a quieter filter (the leveling thing is in there OK — so I don’t think it’s caused by my left hand corner problem…is it?)
3. The lights are lovely, but they don’t seem very bright. Right now, have a little ADA-type stone planted with riccia — will those plants live in the tank? If not, what kind of plants can I have? Or is there some way to make the lights brighter for plants?

Thank you! I love the tank so far, and so do my two little white clouds. I’m planning on getting them some company soon, and hopefully more plants.

And contrary to what I’ve heard from some people, the tank seems quite easy to aquascape and clean. The opening is plenty big!

I recently purchased an Edge, and I, too, am having trouble with the filter. It’s noisy (despite all trouble-shooting), and it is difficult to re-start after cleaning. I’m trying to prime it and it just won’t start circulating the water.

Hello guys -

Hoping for some advice here about my new Fluval Edge set-up.

Its 23 litres and has the Zen Garden add-on. I have the heater and the lights are timed for 9 hours a day. I know there’s also been questions over the oxygenation of the Edge so on the advice of others I also have a small air pump delivering 1 litre per minute which is timed to run 15 out of every 90 minutes.

Its currently cycling with 2 white cloud mountain minnows and tomorrow they will have been in there for a week. Providing my water quality is OK I plan on adding some new fish.

This is the stocking I’m considering and would appreciate any comments & suggestions:

2 x White Cloud Mountain Minnow
3 x Male Guppy
2 x Bumblebee Gobies

I have a fluval edge and love it the only thing I find is the fluval heater 25W does not keep the tank at 78 over night ans our home temp goes down to 68 and the temp in am shows 64 will this hurt the fish when I add them to the tank? right now I have my old 2 year old betta in there and he is doing well but how well will tropical fish do with the temp over night temp drop.

I woke up this morning and looked ant my aquarium thermometer which read 81 degrees F and my Fluval Edge Heater was still turned on (red light on)! I thought it was supposed ot turn off at 78 F. Any suggestions?

Well, I’ll address the two main issues that people seem to be dealing with.

First, consider the following possibilities regarding heaters (not just specifically the Edge heater):

1. If there is not adequate circulation around the heater itself, it could turn on and off without changing the temperature of the entire aquarium. Consider the placement of the heater to solve this potential issue.

2. Sometimes people get worried about tank temperature being out of the desired range by 3-4 degrees when using a standard stick-on lcd thermometer. These thermometers are widely known to be less than precise and at times very inaccurate. Not only do they display a “range” of temperatures by color indication but they are actually measuring the temperature of the glass as opposed to actual water temperature. If you’re concerned about your water temperature and heater functionality, it’s a good idea to double check your water temperature using a glass thermometer that floats or sticks inside the tank.

3. If your room temperature drops into the low to mid 60’s, a 25 watt heater may not be capable of raising the water temperature to the desired 78 degrees.

If these issues have been troubleshooted and the temperature is still out of whack, it is possible that you have a faulty heater in which case you should contact your EDGE retailer or Hagen directly for a replacement.

Second, to troubleshoot a “noisy” filter, it’s important to figure out what exactly is actually causing the sound.

In many cases, the actual cause of the noise is just the top cap piece rattling against the filter body. If this is the case for you, just remove the piece, it will not alter the actual functionality of the filter.

If the pump itself is making noise, it’s possible that a piece of debris has lodged itself in the impeller area and causing noise. Cleaning the impeller should stop any sound and resume normal operation.

Finally, make sure that all seals and connecting points are firmly in place. If these do not work, it is possible that you have a defective filter and should contact your retailer or Hagen directly for a replacement part.

Thanks for the information on the heater – but I would like to know will the overnite drop in the tank hurt the fish or make them sick – I surley don’t want to have sick tank of fish all the time.

It seems when the lights are on that is what rises the water temp, and we need the light on to help the live plants.

Hope you don’t mind me chipping in, but I had similar issues with large variance in temperature and live plants. I have solved both problems by swapping the halogen bulbs for the following LED lights.

They are a straight swap, simply remove existing and replace with the LED ones. They give off no heat and illuminate the tank really well. The ones above give a bright ‘cool’ white, but depending on your preference you can order them with a ‘warmer’ white.

The temperature in the tank stays within a two degree margin, low 23.9 high 26.2 and the fish seem to like it.

Re your point above Deidre, make sure you have the tank full a little bit above the top of the tank, maybe half way up the collar. You can gently ‘burp’ the tank by gently lift one end to coax the bubble into the collar. Another way is to use the Fluval algae magnate to ’round it up’ and nudge it back to the collar.

Sorry I haven’t replied sooner, been a little busy.

I’ve just had a look on the Canadian Ebay site and there are loads on there to choose from. Type in ‘MR11 LED Wide’ on the ebay search page and then pick one! I prefer the ‘white’ as opposed to the ‘warm white’ ones, but which ever you choose you will notice a major improvement, Around 140+ Lumens (brightness) would be about right. $10 US roughly plus delievry but well worth it!

If you really get stuck, I did order one extra set, I’ll happilly post them to you from the UK if you want. Let me know and I can work out cost etc.

Have had my Edge set up for a week with Fluval heater, just got a few fish yesterday and woke up this morning and the temperature had dropped by 4 degrees ? and the light was not on the heater. I know the heater turns on and off depending on temperature but the light was not on this morning even though the thermometer was showing significant drop in temperature. Have now put another heater in until I can solve the problem with the edge heater. Have switched it on and off this morning and the light is back on, but I am a bit worried about this happening again.
Any advice would be a great help .

This response is in reply to Caroline’s post on 12/30 regarding a noisy filter. Mine too was noisy…simple fix…I inserted a filter size sheet of bubble wrap into the filter compartment so that it surrounded the filter when in place. The air pockets absorb the noise and problem solved.

Had my Fluval Edge for about 3 months now and not had a problem until I went to feed the fish this morning.

The pump/filter had stopped working!

Now I havn’t had a close inspection as I was going to work but does anyone know what could be the problem?

The most likely cause for this is that something has either blocked the impeller or become trapped near it, like sand or debris. Unplug the filter, remove it from the tank, and inspect the motor.

Bought my fluval edge two months ago. Initially the filter really annoyed me because its motor was so noisy. However, over time the noise subsided considerably. When I clean the tank and filter, and then prime the filter to get it going again, the noise returns for a short time. I have found, and I have no idea why this is, that if I unplug the filter for a few seconds then plug it back in again, the noise goes away.
I am very happy with this little tank.

I have had my Edge for 2 months, only with Fresh Water and just a few Tetras. The tank is very nice looking however the lack of open water surface area, creates higher levels of ammonia waste to be trapped in water faster, thus causing fish to be unhealthly and a much harder tank to balance correctly. The halogen lamps, cause rapid evaporation of water as well, because of the close position to the water, when tank is filled to Fluvals recommended levels. Although the tank is only 2 months old, and only fresh water has been in tank, no salt at all, the lamp housings are already starting to become brittle and in my opinion, starting to look like a fire hazard. I believe that FLUVAL could have a future safety problem here and possibly should consider a recall, before someone has a real problem. My lamps stay on for 9:00 am to 9:00 pm only. For those using marine life, with salt, that has got to be a complete mess with the salt build up and I do now know how your lamps could still be burning with all that build up on the light housing. It is not a marine tank by no means. One other note, PETSMART, carries the tank and only carbon refill rarely, FLUVAL has to step up to the plate and get PETSMART to carry more replacement parts for such a needy tank, such as; carbon, sponge, bio bag, lamps. I suggest allot a live plants to add oxygen, very small Tetra only, Neons, maybe 1 Betta, thats all.

I originally bought the Fluval Edge over a month ago now and have been very disappointed.

I set everything up exactly as the instructions said, only to find it had the noisiest filter motor I’ve ever heard. I tried everything listed on here (and other sites) to solve the problem. I did everything by the book and still nothing, this went on for the best part of two weeks. So I returned the motor to Pets At Home where I bought it from. They had a look at it and told me there was nothing wrong and it was working fine. So, back home I went and when I got there I found the same problem, nothing had changed. So I took the whole thing back (tank, the lot) and exchanged it for a completely new one.

I’ve just set this one up and guess what, exactly the same problem, if not worse. I can’t hear anything in that room other than the motor noise. It sounds like a very loud vibrating/knocking noise. I would never dream of putting fish in there as I’m sure they’d get an eternal headache.

I’ll be taking this one back tomorrow unless the noise subsides by the morning. I would not recommend this tank to anyone, unless you enjoy having no peace and quiet what so ever.

I turned my lights on the other morning, and both bulbs flashed and went off, like the fuse had gone. Obviously I can’t get into the plug because it’s sealed, so what do you suggest?

Tom, we experienced the same problem with the Fluval. We just purchased one and set it up on Sunday. We were careful to follow all steps in the instruction manuals. About 10 minutes after plugging in the filter system, it began to buzz fairly loudly. We re-checked the set up to see if anything might be loose and thereby causing a vibration. We checked for blockages of any kind. Everything looked secure and clear.

As we had seen one of these aquariums set up and running at the store and it was very quiet, we decided to leave the unit running overnight to see if it would work itself out. The next morning, the buzzing was even louder. We went through the entire set-up again and it appeared correct. Upon start-up again, the buzzing was immediate and just as loud. Two days after the initial set up and the buzzing is unbearable!

I called Hagen Customer Service, but was asked to leave a message to have a rep call me back. No reply yet. I also emailed. No reply yet.

As I’m still waiting, does anyone have any suggestions about resolving this buzzing? Or did we get a lemon filter?

Sand shouldn’t be a problem and looks great in the EDGE. The main thing you need to be careful with is that you don’t let sand get sucked up into the filter as the grains can become lodged in the pump impeller (as with most any filter concerning sand). So just make sure the sand settles before plugging in the EDGE filter.

i had bought a fluval edge when first came out set up with freshwater shrimps very happy with it no problems so i decided to buy another edge jan 2010 and set up another shrimp tank with crystal reds in it i have had nothing but problems with it since i have had it th filter so noisy been changed twice now once by shop once by hagen the lights went after a month had to buy new ones then last night heater malfunctioned heated water to 34 degrees and i lost all my shrimps not very happy at all i wonder if hagen are making them cheaper now to when they first came out going back to shop tomorrow hope to get a refund to get a different tank

I have had my Edge since Christmas and love it, although last week one of the bulbs just dropped into the tank- filled up with water so I couldn’t refit it-plus as it was wet didn’t want to..? ( I could of dislodged it when cleaning a few days earlier perhaps but I don’t recall knocking it). Then, a couple of days later (running on one bulb) that bulb stopped working. I have ordered two replacement bulbs from my aquatics store – still waiting to receive- but after reading all the comments on this forum am wondering if it is the transformer that has gone.

I seem to be having the same problem that everyone else is having. A noisy filter. The tank is sitting on a extremely sturdy base. Everything is in place, and I followed all the instructions on starting it. I took the piece off and I still hear a constant buzzing noise. It gets a bit quieter but never completely silent.

My filter has started playing up recently and it’s started to panic me!

A couple of times it has failed to turn itself on after doing a water change and I have also noticed it has failed to take cycle water occasionally when there is no blockage!

I really want to get this sorted as I don’t want my fish sufferring.

Have lost my receipt and can’t find anything on the Internet to buy a replacement! I don’t want to change the filter as I want to transport my bacteria in the media to the new filter unit.

I bought my Fluval recently, it is a beatiful piece of artwork.

I have some questions:

1. My filter died when I emptied the tank to half and left it running. I tuned it off and on after I had refilled and it made a noise and wouldn’t work. I have bought a new unit(Aquaclear Mini 20) but was wondering, what external canister systems could I use and how do I hook up the pipes to the Fluval? (maybe I should ask the aquarium store?)

2. Do I have too many fish? I have 2 small goldfish, 2 pearl goldfish and 1 Oranda. I had 4 Guppies but lost them when the pump died (morning to evening travel time)

I bought my fluval edge about month ago and the light just recently went out. After contacting the Hagen Customer Support for a replacement, I was told that I had mail in and ship(at my own expense) the nonworking fixture for them to repair or replace. In the same email, there was no time frame as to when I would receive the repaired or new light or what costs might be incurred with the repair. I find the bureaucratic tedious process that Hagen has in place unacceptable when all I want is a new light fixture in a timely manner, not several months down the road. I am willing to pay for a new fixture but that does not seem to be an option without having to purchase an entirely new set up! Enjoyed my aquarium until this very disappointing incident.

Fluvel heaters
2 out of the 3 I’ve used failed to keep to the so called preset temp of 26 degrees. Yep got up on 2 occassions, fluvel edge became a graveyard for all my now dead plants and part boiled fish. 32 degrees at least.
Put it down to a dodgy heater. Put a standard one in there and gradually restocked. Bought another slimline fluvel heater and 3 days later same thing happened again. Result was boiled fish.
Lovely tanks when set up and all lit up. A real pain to clean and your fluvel nets are worse than useless.
Don’t expect to see this posted though.

Hi, I have recently bought an edge, but there wasn’t a users manual in the box. Does anyone know of anywhere I could get one from. I have tried to download one from the hagen website but there doesn’t seem to be one.
I am new to keeping fish and I understand that it contains useful info on which fish are suitable for the tank. I plan to keep cold water fish but am having trouble finding information on how many/which ones, everyone seems to contradict each other!

sounds like we’ve got the same problem as some other people on here – had the fluval for 5 months now – and been great. But – the last couple of times we’ve cleaned the tank, stopped the filter while we were doing it – and then it wouldn’t start again when it was turned back on. The first time we took the filter apart and put it back together – and it started working again. This last time – wouldn’t start at all – until I poked the blades of the pump with something – which started it working again. Same happens every time we turn it off and on again – so can’t just be something stuck in the blade.
Any ideas?

Got it set up and fry in tank, next day and half the fry missing they have been sucked up in to the filter as the end of the filter inlet is larger than the fry.

Beautiful tank. Yes it’s a little tricky to maintain. but worth the beauty. pumps in filters always make some noise. if you’re a silent sleeper put it in your living room. removing the cover does help. live plants are great in this tank. avoid goldfish, too much waste so you’ll be doing more cleaning. algae problem? the fluval magnet algea cleaner works well and goes around corners. brush in circle motions. ask the fishstore workers about what type and how many fish. temp is tricky to maintain due to small tank size and hot lights so get hardy fish. whew!

I had the filter noise problem when i first purchased the Edge. It soon quietened down, and now six months later it is indeed virtually silent. I’ve had no other problems with this lovely little tank, and do hope it stays that way. As i noted above a few months ago, i do find (and i can’t explain why) that when i plug the filter back in after a cleaning, it sometimes is noisy again. I unplug it and plug it in again, and it is quiet.
I do find, after turning off the filter and cleaning the tank, that some air does take awhile to get thru the system, and this may
cause some gurgling noise. I just move the intake back and forth, so the different pressure helps the air bubble to get pushed through.
As for air bubbles at the top of the tank that is an easy fix. I have a magnetic algae remover, and just use that to push all the air to the central surface area. Takes but a minute.
I should mention that i don’t use a heater. Not sure if this makes the difference. My little guppies, threadfin rainbows, and shrimp are quite happy. I’ve lost only one shrimp in the six months i’ve been running this tank.
Oh, and the lights and housing seem just fine. Perhaps because i keep the filter running on low-flow (i.e. pushed toward the centre) all the time. I find full blast disturbs the threadfin rainbows: just too much current in such a small space.
The water level does indeed need topping up, every other day or so. This is probably because the lighting is quite hot and it is right above the filter outflow so evaporates the water quickly.

a light bulb burned out..i replaced it..then the other burned out..then the one i replaced burned out..all within a month. now no new lighbulbs work. what do i do now know and who can i contact in the usa?

I’ve just got an edge it awesome, however i keep getting little air bubbles collecting on the top pane of glass how can i prevent this?? also how many fish can i fit in the tank?? thanks

Hi guys!
@ jean – I had this too and i’ve upgraded the lighting to MR16 LEDs – a bit of DIY! – if you need a guide i’ve posted on Fluval Edge Forums.

@ craig – the big bubbles can be removed using the Fluval algae magnet and filling up to the neck – most will disappear after a while.
With regards to the number of fish, i’ve seen on the forums some people have overstocked quite heavily, but i’d look at 6-8 fish max (less if you have a betta) and add them slowly.

My 405 is just humming.Took it apart and didnt find anythig wrong.The magnetic impellar seemed to be turning on the porsolin shaft ok but after it ran for a couple hours i had the sameproblem it seemed to stop spinning again any ideas.

Hello,

Month ago I bought filter fluval G3. My aqarium is 260 litres and after two weeks the filter flow decreased to 50%. I have cleaned the mechanical filter but after 3-4 days it is again decreasing to 50 %. At this moment we have 7 fishes that is not biger then 7 cm. Please could you advice why so often we need to clean the mechanical filter? Accordig the specification it necesasry to do every two weeks?
