I bought a fluval 90 gallon tank with a 405 filter package. I have had nothing but trouble with this system. I don’t know if the filter is not working properly or the water in my home is a problem, but i cannot get the water to stay clear!. I use zeo carbon on the bottom tray with carbon on the next level. The next two i use the bio max media, with the top drawer also placing the polishing pad on each side of the top of the bio max. The hoses have a slight curve, but the pressure seems to be fine. The water has turned a cloudy green color and i have used algefix, and one time it did work, but i am at the beginning again. I need some help! If you could send me any information on this product i would deeply appreciate it, as i am very frustrated at this point, and ready to call it quits, Jerry.

If your water is green your tank is getting too much light – and potentially too much food or nutrients.

No filter can remove green single-celled algae that cause green water – you’d need to add a UV sterilizer for that which causes the algae to stick together and become big enough for the filter to catch.

make sure your tank isn;t getting direct sunlight – and have the tank lights on for about 6 hours a day.

Test your water for nitrate – as high nitrate is food for algae.

Do regular partial water changes of around 25% of the volume of the tank.

It really isn’t your filter at fault if the water is green.

Do a goodle search for ‘fixing green water’ and you’ll see it’s a common problem among fishkeepers who have either too much light or nutrients in their tank – regardless of the type of filter they use.

I have had a fluval edge for just over a year and it has worked fine apart from last night the filter was unplugged for a few seconds and the filter has stopped working. the fuse has been replaced and still not working, at the same time the thermostat also stopped working but is of a different brand.

Hi I have just got myself a nice Fluval 200 Tank, but I would like to use a Fluval-305 External filter.
But the hood on the tank does not have holes for the external filters pipes to run through…

Is there a replacment hood panel that is built to take this filter or
do I have to try to cut holes into it myself?

I bought a Fluval C3 filter a month ago. Why isn’t the blog site for the C series working? Why isn’t the C3 series on the Hagen website? Yes, I’ve had people tell me it’s new and that information will be out soon, but come on! It’s been a month and the manufacturer doesn’t have at least a mention of the filter on the website…. geez.

I recently purchased U3 filter for my 29G and I am very impressed. With not only the construction of the filter and media but its water movement. I have a 305 in a 55G and again, very impressed. Which is why I decided to get a Fluval for my smaller tank. Both are very simple to clean, filters are cheap, and have a great variety of media.

PS. Does anyone have experience with UV lights? Do they work well/worth it? I only ask because my 55G does get some sunlight–which I can’t avoid.

I need instructions for removing the ceramic impeller shaft from the housing. The shaft snapped but the base is still attached.

I have 90 gallon fresh water tropical tank with 405 filter
i would like to put a uv system in. what would be the safest on my wallet but still take care of parasites bacteria and algae. My concernis the 405 is 304gph and the uv sterilizer needs the water to run slower to be effective. what cAN I DO?

    Matthew,
It sounds like it’s been a rough couple of days with your new tank. Is this your first aquarium? I’ve had an Edge now for almost a year, and I haven’t had any problems at all like what you describe.

I will admit though, I tend to keep more nano-appropriate fish like rasboras and dwarf rainbows as opposed to goldfish. I think it also helps in this small tank to include hearty live plants like java fern, swords, or anubias. Additionally, moss balls are a great deterrent for algae growth.

The filter included is designed to trap debris, and the carbon is to remove organics and heavy metals. The final stage is the biological media where the nitrifying bacteria are housed. It could be possible that you have a bacterial bloom, which is extremely common in new tanks. There is a product called Bio Clear, made by Nutrafin that may help rid the cloudiness.

Additionally, the gravel may produce dust if it wasn’t rinsed thoroughly before placing it in the aquarium. Clear Fast will help glue the particles together and catch them in the filter.

Did you follow the directions specifically on the Cycle, included with the tank? With the new formulation of Cycle, you need to add it over a span of 3 days. You could have a bacteria bloom if you added the entire bottle on day 1.

i have a fluval 305 atm in our 485litre tank. obviously this isnt doing the job so can someone tell me what fluval pump i should be upgrading to please??

Hi Amy, you have a few choices. You could buy another Fluval external (105 or 205 would be sufficient) and run it alongside your current filter. If you want to upgrade then a 405 on its own may not be quite enough for your tank (it’s suitable for tanks up to 400 litres), but that depends on stocking levels and fish types.
A Fluval FX5 will certainly do the job and is very flexible in terms of media choice.
Finally, if you want the best of the best you could go for a Fluval G6 (rated for aquariums up to 600 litres). It features a digital display, flow monitoring, conductivity monitoring, zero bypass filtration and a host of other cool features – check it out at http://www.fluval-g.com.

    Hi, my apologies if you have answered this before;

I have a Fluval 3G on a 150 Litre Aquarium working fantastically I would”t be without it! I’m looking for a replacement UV steriliser currently I have a separate FishRFun unit which has done me well, but I was hoping to purchase an Inline unit to go on the output of the 3G, do you have any recommendations as I couldn’t see a Fluval product!

    Many thanks

I have had a Fluval 405 for about 8 months and its been making loud clattering-like noises sporadically. What could be causing this?

One person suggested that the propeller is trying to spin backwards? If this is the case, how can i fix it?

If not, what else could it be?

I would hate to think that I spent over $200 on junk. My sister is looking into buying a canister filter – should I tell her to stay away from Fluval brand?

  20. Hagen 01.02.11 / 5am

HI Cheryl, clattering noises are usually caused by air trapped in the filter. This means there is air being drawn in somehow – here are some things to try to diagnose where it’s coming from.

Is there an air source (air stone, air curtain or similar) in the tank near to the intake strainer? If so, move it away from the intake or remove it/turn it off completely.

Take the filter apart and check the main filter gasket seal ring and the ‘o’ rings where the intake hose connects to the filter. If any are dirty then clean and re-seat them (wet them first). If any are damaged you can order replacements through your local Hagen dealer.

If you have tried all this and nothing has worked the impeller may be damaged – check and clean it when you have the filter taken apart. It won’t be trying to spin backwards but it’s possible the shaft or fins could be damaged. A replacement can again be ordered through a Hagen dealer.

Your Fluval filter carries an industry leading 3 year manufacturers warranty so if it is genuinely defective it will be repaired or replaced. Try the above steps first though – 99 times out of 100 these will cure the problem.

I have 8 year old 204 fluval, in the last month the water has been cloudy I do water changes every few days since this has been happening. I change the carbon three times as well as cleaning the media. The pump is workig well but the water is always cloudy. The carbon is large in shape and size could this be the problem.
